Hi, I’m Bug.

Mom. Wife. Writer. Bacon hater – please don’t drop me as a friend.

Ok, my real name is Julie. Bug is a nickname.

I am married to Scott. We have two school-aged daughters, Emma and Kate.

We live in a suburb of Kansas City. I started this blog in 2009 as a way to document the lives of my children. And then it spiraled out of control and I somehow went off on a bikini wax rant.

Welcome to Bug Bytes!

I’ll be fast, I swear.

My blog story:

My writing story:

  • I am currently a writer for Simply KC Magazine. If you don’t live in Kansas City, you should read it online. I write articles about parenting, health and beauty, and I have my own column titled, “Because I Said So.”
  • I am consistently one of the funniest parents on Huffington Post Parents, Disney’s Babble, and NBC’s The Today Show.
  • I am a 2016-2017 ambassador for National Geographic Kids.
  • I’m a co-author in the humor anthology, “But Did You Die?” – a parenting advice book by a bunch of know-it-alls. You can buy the book here.

  1. julie,
    I love the story about
Emma. She will be a leader with her peers and not a follower! You are a good writer.
maybe you should contact the kc star and help write the moms to moms section.

  2. whoa. we have a lot in common: 1. i love KSU 2. i burp A LOT and really loud, 3. i also can’t stand ice in my drinks, and 4. i talk about poop way, way, way too much. unfortunately i majored in fashion in college and i’m a pretty good cook, but what does that matter! your blog is hilarious 🙂 love the story about emma and the jayhawk!

  3. as i’m sure you’ll find a huge spike in visitors to your site, following the hilarious and awesome jayhawk coloring story on yahoo, that is how i made my way here. i would normally have left after reading the full story about emma and the coloring incident, but decided to read a couple more. and, i gotta say, they’re hilarious. they’re especially hilarious to me because my wife and i have a daughter and a second one on the way. i can only imagine a very similar life in our household in a couple of years. love the family dynamic you all have going on…sounds very familiar! congrats and enjoy!

  4. My childhood friend in KC forwarded the KC Star piece about your daughter’s refusal to color the Jayhawk (yea Emma!). I live in NJ now but am Kansas born and raised and a former K-Stater (class ’71). Found the story hilarious and thought you’d be interested to know that your daughter’s fame has now spread well beyond the Midwest….clearly a very bright little girl! Sheryl G.

  5. Hi Bug/Julie,

CNN would be interested in using your pics for a piece we are doing on Kansas State Uni.

We would be happy to courtesy credit you/your site. Our standard broadcast needs are for use in the story context on all CNN networks & affiliates, all media worldwide?

    Many thanks in advance.

  6. Julie, New South Media is publishing a Sports & Travel Guide to the Big 12. For the section on K-State, we have featured the story about your daughter’s refusal to color the Jayhawk. We would love to include the photo of her apology note that has been widely published with this story. Please contact New South Media at 304.413.0104 or by email at info@wvlivingmagazine.com. By the way, great blog!

  7. Are you one of those really petite women who burps freakishly loud? I’m related to several and it’s quite amusing and disgusting at the same time. Good for you for flossing nightly, you have a great smile. I look forward to reading more of your blog.

    1. So much for the claim that Jews have dual loyalty. They vote in droves for the anti-Israel candidate and the Jewish owned newspaper of record is unsympathetic to Israel. The New York Times was founded by two Jewish families and is owned by their squirrelly descendants. Some of whom are Jews while some are half Jew, half Episcopalian. Some call it part of the Jewish owned media

    2. I have to agree, we should not be paying for the consequences of known and expected dangers. How many houses fall off hillsides out there each year? Yes it is sad to see the loss of life, but they also had warnings long before these huge rains and I’m sure they could see the indicators in the days and hours before it gave way. It’s hard to out run a bolt of lightning or tornado, but this was no suprise. Grr.

    3. हर कड़ी की तरह यह कड़ी भी सबके दिमाग पर अपनी अमिट छाप छोड़ती हुई …अपनी मेहनत को दर्शाती हुई ..आभार ।

  8. I just found your blog from Eli (Coach Daddy). I live in Kansas, too (I’m a transplant from Texas) – we are in Topeka but Kansas City makes me much happier!!!

    1. Oh I love meeting Kansas bloggers! Glad you found me and nice to meet you. I drive through Topeka every time we head to K-state! Topeka has its perks!! I’ll check out your blog. 🙂
