Jamie Miller Images.

Jamie, I’m really excited for you to take our pictures but we might have a problem with our photo shoot.

What’s wrong?

Ha! Nothing really. It’s just…well, Kate won’t smile for pictures. I mean, whatever you capture of Kate in the moment will be fine.

Oh, she’ll smile. I’ve had kids like Kate before. We’ll get her laughing with Emma. I’ll have you and Scott step away and I’ll just have some fun with her while I snap away. No problem.

Oh. Ok, yeah. I’ll honestly be shocked if she smiles. Here, let me show you what I’m talking about:

Here she is at Scott's birthday dinner...

I took the girls out for ice cream. Told them to smile.

I took a few pictures of Scott and Emma practicing shooting the bow. Kate wanted her picture taken too.

Don’t you worry, lady. I got this.

This picture popped up on my personal Facebook page a few weeks ago:

- Hey guys, let's walk and do a little swinging of the youngest (we need a little distraction to get her back on track with the picture taking). Um, you guys are fantastic! The image says it all. Not only can you swing one child and walk at the same time but you can swing two and keep walking (and they are both laughing). Thank you guys for a FABULOUS shoot. I can't wait to share the rest. They are all amazing!!

No. The miracle isn’t that Scott and I can easily swing 90 pounds of kids. We’re weight-lifting gym rats. Those kids might as well have been 8 bags of groceries in our hands. Easy.

The miracle was this little jewel:

WHAT IS THIS

Emma is so cute and OH MY GOSH, WHAT IS THIS.

THIS.

THIS. RIGHT HERE.

Kate is smiling.

Not only is she smiling but this is the biggest smile I have ever seen from the child. I didn’t even know her mouth is this big.

I don’t know how Jamie captured what she did. In a fraction of a second, Jamie captured what I see every day with my kids. I didn’t dare make eye contact with Kate during the shoot in fear of that little Medusa turning our family portraits into stone. Jamie should have been here to capture my face as I looked through the proofs for the first time. Tears, Jamie, TEARS. I finally have Kate’s beautiful 4-year-old smile. And, of course, pictures of that camera-loving mini me, Emma.

Oh, and Jamie even made Scott look good. He was in the dog house at the time of the photo shoot. I could have swore he had devil horns on his head that day. They somehow disappeared. That photoshop, I tell you…

Girls, tell Jamie thank you for your pictures!

I tried.

I tried, Jamie. Medusa is back. Don’t look at her eyes.

Thank you, Jamie Miller Images. You did the impossible and we thank you.

  1. These are great! Very beautiful family you have! I too have a “Kate”/Medusa in my family. She is now 17 and I still make her give me a smile. We accepted the fact that she was born in a bad mood. Hee,hee.
